The color connection between the coleus in the bed below and the cypress vine (Ipomoea quamoclit) and black-eyed susan (Thunbergia Alata) vines is great. And by the way, collecting that many rusted rakes is in itself a feat. People either love it or hate it. I've always believed that you have to have a sense of humor about life.

I'm standing by a column (a fiberglass one I bought at Lowe's) that has a sprinkler head implanted in the top of it. I enjoy tucking away sprinkler heads in unlikely places to hide them from view. You'll also notice a wide range of textures in this shade garden, which makes it come alive.

Fountains give a great place to insert water plants into the landscape. The variegated plant in the background is spiral ginger, a tropical (Costus speciosus variegatus). The water plant is water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes). A word of warning: this water plant can become very invasive in natural waterways. Be responsible and keep it at home.

A great way to add constant color to the shade garden is through use of objects such as this cermanic blue orbs. Displayed with the hosta 'Francee', they make the scene come to life. You'll also notice the texture changes between the hosta, dwarf nandina (Nandina domestica ‘Harbor Dwarf’), and astilbe pumila.

A great place for chairs and benches in the garden are those trouble spots where you can't get a plant to grow. This area has lots of red maples shading it and robbing the soil of moisture. So the placement of the table and two chairs helps to turn a difficult area into to an asset.

This slide is from my mom's patio home garden. Everything is by necessity on a small scale, but the rock paths, pond and bridges offer the scene interest and create a great foil against which to display plants.

I so enjoy planting next to this dry stream bed on the South side of my house. The river rock lined swale serves a practical purpose as it carries surface and gutter collected water away, but it also serves as a focal spot to display plants. The lawn is St. Augustine.
